From 6:00pm Friday night to 8:00pm Sunday night, it would probably be one of the most intensive weekend you have ever experience. You will be working with new friends/stranger, passionate mentors are going to give you advise that may or may not to your liking and event facilitators/organizers are committed to create a friendly fast moving environment to foster great ideas and implementation.
2 of the most objectives of Startup Weekend are to find a co-founder and to learn about lean startup concept and methodology. Whether if you are planning to actually start a new venture or here to learn and make new friends, below is a list of suggestions for you to make the best of this 54 startup event experience.
建議/Suggestion #1: 開放的態度和樂在其中 / Be Open Minded & Have Fun
Be Open Minded & Have Fun
If you have never been to a startup event or work in a startup, this weekend can be a life time changing experience, only if you are determined to embrace new core-concept and working methodologies that may be totally against what you used to believe or used to do. Having an opened mind and trying to enjoy the event is essential. We do not encourage to “fight against” these new concepts, but to listen first before making a judgement in what the organizer/facilitator/mentor/judge are trying to share. At the end of day, not all the advise and statement would be applicable or be right as the global environment changes as we speak. Therefore, having a positive attitude to have fun and willingness to learn, will definitely be the right choice to get the most out of the 54 hours experience.
建議/Suggestion #2: 嘗試站上講台和叫賣你看見的問題 / Try to pitch a problem
Get on the stage and pitch a problem
Regardless whether if your pitch is selected Friday night, the experience of pitching along is already worth your time and effort in attending the event. Standing in front of people you don’t know and be passionate about the problem that you would like to solve, would be the first step to startup. For the people who are evaluating doing a startup for the first time, pitching will be the first and a constant activity that you will do for the rest of your life. So, get a head start, because if you are able to pitch in front of 60 to 100 people, then you will be sure not to be intimated to pitch to the next 100 people during the next 50 hours.
建議/Suggestion #3: 社交和認識新朋友 / Network and make new friends
Network and make new friends
The success of early stage startup is actually not funding, but the resources which you can access. Know the right people who can help you in any way is a value that you bring on to the table for your team. Thus, a good place to start is actually get to know as many people as possible while trying to be 110% focus on your team. What it means is to take advantage of opening and closing and as well breaks when you are eating. Your startup does not end Sunday night, but actually starts when the event is over. What could possibly happen is a new team may be formed after the confession meeting taking place the following week, and you only to find out that 80% of your team mate will not continue the project. This would be a perfect time to reach out to people you met during the weekend, and see if they would like to work on your project.
建議/Suggestion #4: 做強而有力的決策 / Make Powerful Decision
Make Powerful Decision
Throughout the 54 hours, you will be faced with countless decision. Some choices are easy to make such as decide what to eat in the next 7 meals. However some choices are not as easy such as picking the idea or team that you will be working the next 50 hours. Even sometime, you will be forced to make a decision to leave a team or politely ask one of your team member to leave the team. Other decision would be choosing a compatible mentor or even just choose to follow your gut instinct. All the decisions that you make, please do consider the potential consequence, because they will affect the outcome of your startup. What we do not encourage you to do, is to follow the crowd and not have your own opinion, because doing Startup is all about making decision without prior experience or knowledge. Having the opportunities to practice to make powerful decision, will definitely help you to be an successful entrepreneurs.
